Hiking with a Toddler
We have been an adventurous type of couple. Traveling and hiking always unite us. This has been one of our plan and goal to introduce when we welcome our son. Our mandate is to let him experience the world, different culture, climb mountains and see places.
We did accomplish one today! My son's first climb and here are some tips that might be helpful in planning to bring your toddler.
Plan Ahead
Preparing him weeks ahead of the climb had been really helpful. We do our morning run and afternoon walk in the park regularly. Emotionally and mentally we tried to explain and talk to him about climbing the mountain. While we tell him about the possible trip, we try to gauge if he is interested and he has shown so much excitement which made us feel more relieved.
Planning for clothes, food, and tools have been a must. We didn't care if we left our personal things as long as my son has everything he needs.
Research and Look for a Guide
I did my assignment - RESEARCH about the trail, read blogs and reviews from other mountaineers. Luckily, my husband has climbed this mountain and he was familiar on the difficulty level. We were blessed by being assigned to a local guide with a good heart for kids and kind enough to support us.
Check Weather
This is a lesson a learned for us. I honestly did not check the weather on the day we will climb the mountain. Unfortunately, it rains so hard in the evening until morning. But, my son has been a trooper. He never complained, did not cry and he was game to take pictures. He was smiling and was very playful. My heart melted seeing how he truly enjoyed his first climb.
